Successful applicants will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check at their own expense. Further information regarding this process will be provided to successful applicants. Trainees are also obliged to complete and return the SCITT’s Health Declaration form, leading to confirmation by the relevant Health Service of their fitness to teach. Further information will be provided to successful applicants.
* If English is your second language you will need to demonstrate at interview the correct and fluent use of standard English, both spoken and written. During the programme, trainees are assessed against the Teachers’ Standards for the award of Qualified Teacher Status and Teachers’ Standard 3 requires teachers to:
“Demonstrate an understanding of and take responsibility for promoting high standards of literacy, articulacy and the correct use of standard English, whatever the teacher’s specialist subject.”
Degree
You should have, or expect to be awarded an honours degree (minimum class 2:2) by a British University or an equivalent qualification. For secondary school teaching, we generally look for your degree to be at least 50% of your chosen specialised subject. However, we may still consider your application if you hold a high A-Level qualification (or equivalent) in your chosen subject.
Applicants who are offered a place will be asked to provide certificates for both the degree and GCSE (or equivalent) examinations.
GCSE
Applicants will also need GCE ‘O’ level or GCSE passes (grades A* – C or 9 – 4) or the equivalent in English Language and Mathematics. Replacement certificates (or certified statements of results) can be requested from the examination boards for any lost/stolen certificates. Full details can be found on the Government website.
Applicants who are otherwise suitable for ITT but, for whatever reason, have not successfully achieved a GCSE grade C / 4 may be given an opportunity to show that they can nevertheless meet the required standard, either by taking an equivalence test or by offering other evidence of attainment, which should demonstrate a similar level and breadth.
Applicants who are offered a place will be asked to provide certificates for both the degree and GCSE (or equivalent) examinations.
References
With your application, you will need to provide satisfactory references, generally from academic referees. Mature applicants who have been away from education for some time may supply professional references.
UK ENIC
If you gained your academic qualifications outside of the UK, you must obtain a Statement of Comparability from UK ENIC in order to meet criteria set by the UK Government. For more information please click here.
Fundamental English and mathematics
Trainees are no longer required to take the literacy and numeracy Professional Skills tests. However, all teachers are expected to be competent in fundamental English and mathematics.
All our trainees are required to complete the Elevate My Maths package. There are 7 separate modules covering different areas of mathematics.
DBS
Successful applicants will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check at their own expense. Further information regarding this process will be provided to successful applicants. All trainees who present a DBS that is not completely clear are subject to a SCITT ‘Suitability to Teach’ Panel meeting and each case is examined on an individual basis. The panel decides whether the candidate is to be accepted on to the course, and is therefore ‘suitable to teach’ or whether the application to train to teach with the Hampshire SCITT Partnership should be rejected. The decision of the panel is final.
If you have lived, worked or been on holiday in any country outside of the UK within the last 10 years, for a period in excess of 3 months, you must let us know as it is likely further checks will be required.
All safer recruitment procedures are followed by the Hampshire SCITT Partnership. All the schools in our partnership are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and they expect all staff, trainees and volunteers to share responsibility for this.
Health Declaration Form
All trainees are obliged to complete and return the SCITT’s Health Declaration Form, leading to confirmation by the relevant Health Service of their fitness to teach. In some circumstances, the Health Service may make additional inquiries and provide some guidance on adjustments required.
Visa to Study
Applicants from non EU countries must hold an appropriate visa stating that they are eligible to study in the UK for the duration of the course. The Hampshire SCITT Partnership and our partnership schools are not able to provide sponsorship for a visa. If the partnership has any concerns regarding the suitability of a visa, it is the applicant’s responsibility to provide the necessary documentation and clarification.
