Humanitarian Education Programme (British Red Cross)
We are working on how we can best equip teachers with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to address critical humanitarian topics, such as migration, climate, conflict, and building personal and community resilience.
Our research has shown that teachers are nervous about tackling issues such as conflict, whether it be Israel/Gaza or violence within the UK. Our aim is to help teachers feel more confident to pass forward knowledge and skills to young people, whilst inspiring them to become the next generation of humanitarians.
We understand that these subjects can be challenging to address, which is why our research is focused on how we can:
- Support teachers - offering professional development and resources that give teachers the confidence to tackle complex humanitarian issues in the classroom
- Engage students - helping students develop critical thinking and empathy through interactive and relevant content.
- Build resilience - equipping young people with the knowledge and skills to navigate and respond to global challenges, fostering a more resilient and compassionate society.
Currently, we are testing a new, blended programme of humanitarian education, based on a train-the-trainer model. We are looking for schools and academy trusts to pilot the resources, and we are inviting you to join us.
As part of the development group, you'll access CPD, e-learning, support sessions, and free teaching resources. You'll play a key role in shaping the final product through your feedback.
In the initial phase, we are developing resources for Conflict in Conversation and First Aid.
We offer three ways to support you and your colleagues:
- Face-to-face CPD sessions (location dependent)
- Online CPD sessions (masterclasses or webinars)
- Early access to pilot e-learning modules and free teaching resources
All our support services and resources are free. In return, we ask for your feedback to ensure our materials meet your needs and help you deliver high-quality humanitarian education.
